Ramsey wins wild North 1 Group 2 championship game by Brian Marron of The Record
RAMSEY – As the ball left Olivia Sebastian’s hand toward home plate on Tuesday, Ramsey’s magical season hung in the balance.
The Rams, undefeated and No. 1 in North 1, Group 2, allowed Jefferson to tie the sectional championship with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. With one out in the frame, Sebastian nailed a tagging runner from center field, preserving the tie to help Ramsey eventually win, 5-4, in nine innings.
Ryan Henry provided the game-winning shot, smacking a 3-2 pitch for a two-run homer and her second RBI of the afternoon.
Ramsey overcame adversity at several points, as the Falcons jumped on Rams ace Victoria Sebastian early for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The team then fought back with a Maddie Taradash solo homer in the fourth, and Sebastian provided her own run support with a two-run jack in the fifth.
“It was really nice because they showed their resiliency in battling back all game,” Ramsey head coach Chris Caserta told NorthJersey.com, noting that his team was prepared for a late push from Jefferson. “I knew they weren’t going away. We like to fight too, and like to come through with the big hit at the right time.”
Sebastian threw a complete game in the circle, striking out five while conceding 10 hits and five walks.
The sectional title caps a successful few days for Ramsey (27-0), as the Rams took the Bergen County tournament title on Saturday.
