Mahwah’s Stern adds to medal county by Zach Miller of The Record

OLD TAPPAN — For a few minutes, Lauren Stern’s day seemed headed for major disappointment.

Stern, who won the girls Division B long jump title Friday at the first day of the Bergen County Championships, fouled out of the triple jump — an event she won last season — to start Saturday. Some panic had set in before her last attempt, as worry about reaching her next event on time slipped into her mind.

As she hustled back to the track to line up for the 100 hurdles, rain poured from the overcast skies and the wind started to pick up.

But in the span of 16 seconds, Stern salvaged her day in a major way, racing to the hurdles title for the second-straight season.

“I’ve been working on being more aggressive, I have to be faster over the hurdle,” Stern said. “I held my race better at the end and was faster over the hurdles, not reaching for them.”

The win marks the second straight year that Stern has won two Bergen County medals.

“She’s extremely talented, she works very, very hard. She always tries to improve, not just physically, but technically,” said Don Bosco coach Dave Ledo, who works with Stern privately. “(Fouling out is) very rare of her; she’ll figure it out and she’ll come back.”

Freshman Krawczyk wins three titles

Facing the largest meet of her young career, Northern Highlands freshman Kyla Krawczyk remained unfazed all weekend on the way to two Division A individual titles and anchoring the Highlanders to the 4-x-400 title.

Krawczyk won the 400 on Friday with a time of 58.01 and won the 800 on Saturday with a time of 2:22.97.

“This is my second season of track, all I’ve been doing is working hard and coming here feeling prepared and listening to my coach and teammates,” she said. “I treat every race as if it’s my last one of the day, give it 110 percent.”
