Pascack Valley, Teaneck win at Crusader Classic by Greg Tartaglia of The Record

HACKENSACK — The last time Tom Smith competed in a varsity tournament at Bowler City, the Pascack Valley senior won the North 1A sectional high game award in February.

Saturday, he was on the exact same lane, No. 13, when he opened the sixth annual Tom Irwin Memorial Crusader Classic with seven consecutive strikes. That started the Indian boys team on its way to a three-game total of 2,887, which gave it the title over Montville (2,827) and Lyndhurst (2,825).

Teaneck captured the girls division by topping Wayne Valley, 2,477-2,459.

Kyle Schellberg of Dumont won boys high series with a 709, edging Nick Cilento of Pompton Lakes by two pins. Danielle Quitola of Ridgefield Park (613) won the girls high series award.

Smith finished with a 667 series. Senior Brian Sumereau and junior Henry Tipping are also back after helping Pascack Valley reach last season’s state team finals.

“We’ve improved immensely, there’s no question about it,” Indians coach Judy Lucia said. “But I was thinking top 10 would make a good impression [on Saturday].”

Teaneck, which won the Big North National girls title last season, had two bowlers returning from that squad, senior Gail Kelly and junior Valeria Rosario. The Highwaywomen became an even more serious favorite to repeat with the arrival of three skilled newcomers – junior Gianni Calzadilla moved to Teaneck from Cliffside Park, and freshmen Mia Aish (570 series) and Margaux Lesser joined the team.

“The two freshmen are what sealed the deal,” Teaneck coach Stephanie Baer said. “That’s my secret weapon.”
