Bergen Catholic added the first of what the Crusaders hope are several titles to their record Wednesday with an impressive 5-1 victory over St. Joseph.
The win clinched the pretigious Big North United Division title. It was the first time BC has won the league since 2004, breaking a long string of St. Joseph and Don Bosco dominance.
“I’m proud of these boys,†said BC coach Mark DeMenna. “They worked very hard to earn this.
“When you play in our league and set your goals, the first thing on your check list is to win the league. You win this league, and that means you are right in the thick of county and state.â€
Junior Michael Martinez, one of the best defensive center fielders in North Jersey, had a home run, stole two bases and scored three runs. Jared Verebey scattered six hits to improve to 5-0. You can read more in Thursday’s Record.
