Dumont softball player Lyndsey Gray has been named The Record’s Athlete of the Week for 4/8/14.

Lindsey Gray wants to be a physics teacher someday, but when she recently got a taste of what it would be like to stand in front a roomful of eighth-graders, she admitted it was a little nerve-racking.

As a participant in a program called Tomorrow’s Teachers, the Dumont senior was giving a math lesson last week. She remembered to ask the students to refer to her as Ms. Gray. The only problem was she forgot that she’s Ms. Gray.

“It’s sounds so weird,” she said. “Sometimes I didn’t pick up on it. They were like ‘Ms. Gray! Ms. Gray!’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s me.’ It took me a while.”

She had an easier time teaching some North Jersey softball hitters a few lessons last week.

The Record Female Athlete of the Week didn’t surrender an earned run in going 3-0. The left-hander struck out 33, walked six, and gave up nine hits over the three games.

Gray contributed to the offense, too. In the win against Tenafly, she broke open a scoreless game with a two-run single in the third inning.

Her passion for teaching isn’t confined to the classroom, Dumont coach Richard Wilson said. He says she often acts as a mentor to the younger players.
